Airports, however important to a city, is useful only to the creamiest of the populace. My guess is that 95 % of the Indian population never in its lifetime gets to travel by a plane. The Railways and the Buses are the real transporters. But when you consider the kind of money and attention given to Airports by the Governments compared to the Railway and Bus stations in India it makes one think about the step motherly treatment being meted out.
For example, the Bangalore international airport though being the world's 4th fastest growing airport caters to 12 Million passengers annually. Compare this to the number of passengers the Bangalore City Railway station handles. It is definitely, undoubtedly multiple times higher. But one visit to the local Railway station would make you sneer at the facilities and sanitation. Actually lack of them.
Not that the Airport's should not get this kind of attention and resource, but the Govt should also treat the other more accessed hubs equally well, if not better. Its fairly simple. More passengers access stations hence more energy and resource must be spent on these facilities.
I understand that when the number of users of any facility increases it becomes that much difficult for the clean upkeep.
Airport's definitely are a window to the world to look into the city. They are kind of torch bearers of the city to the external world. Don't want to sound like a "red"-faced communist but for a common man the Railway and Bus stations really matter and not the glitz and glamour of a spectacular airport.
